3 Tips to Improve Your Mood

When it comes to improving your mood, you’ve probably heard of thinking about the ‘glass being half full’ right? And there is some logic behind that.

Basically, and I know this might sound a little far fetched but trust me here, what you focus on you attract.  

When you’re constantly thinking about how crap your situation is:

  • How much debt you have
  • There’s never enough (time, money, sleep…)
  • How miserable you are

then your brain assumes that’s what you actually want more of, because you’re constantly thinking and talking about it.  When you can switch that around to focus on the positive, your brain will, again, assume THAT is what you want.

Let me be clear (in case you’re reading this thinking ‘but I AM broke, there ISN’T enough’...) I’m not talking about being 100% happy and positive all the freaking time. This isn't about unicorns and rainbows and kittens licking your face. But when you can ‘set’ your ‘mind’ as often as possible to bring you more of the good stuff you’ll be on the right path.


One way to improve your mood and set your mind up for happiness is to do something that makes you happy.

Sounds easy right? Well, it kinda is!

When we do something that makes us laugh, gives us a buzz, feel pleasure and enjoyment etc, the brain responds by sending ‘happy chemicals’ into our body. This then counteracts the stress one, gives us even more of a boost and everything feels a little bit lighter and a little less difficult.

There are so many ways that you can improve your mood but for now I’ll just go into three easy ones to get you started.

Implement the following tips every day for the next 7 days. If you can do these first thing in the morning you’ll be set up for the rest of the day but as long as you fit them in somewhere it will still make a difference.  They will then start to feel more habitual

1. Dance Your Ass Off!

Let’s start with an easy peasy fun one!

Think of a song that you absolutely love that whenever you hear it you can’t help but dance along. If you’re in the car you’ll be tapping your feet and drumming the steering wheel. If you’re cooking dinner you’ll be wiggling your bum. Or maybe it’s a song with such powerful song lyrics that it fires you up! For me, it’s ‘Happy’ by Pharell Williams. Doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing, if it comes on I’m dancing!

Another song that sets me up for an awesome day is ‘I’m So Excited’ by The Pointer Sisters. Yep, super cheese fest!


Make the time every day (and several times a day if you can) to put this song on and dance. I mean REALLY dance! Dance like nobody’s watching, Dance like your life depends on it. Turn it up and let loose! Or if you’re in the car on your way to work, turn it up loud and sing your heart out!

Music can be so powerful for bringing about certain emotions and there will definitely be songs that make you feel inspired, fun, free or sexy, whatever it is for you.

But also, when you move your body, your brain releases happy chemicals called endorphins into your body which makes you feel even better!

This sets you up for a happier, more focused, less stressful day. Any time you feel annoyed, low energy or in a ‘bit of a funk’ go through this process and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can turn it around!

2. Gratitude Attitude

This one is another easy one and takes literally a few minutes a day but is super powerful - especially when you make it habitual and do this daily.

One of the reasons we find ourselves getting so stressed and unhappy with our circumstances is because we focus so much on the lack.  The lack of time, lack of money, lack of help, lack of passion...

I’ve said before (and I’ll continue to bash you over the head with this to make sure you really get it…) that what we focus on, we attract more of. So when we focus on the lack, we draw in more lack. 

That’s why when you wake up in the morning and the first thing you think about is how little sleep you got, how crap and tired you feel and ultimately how long your day will feel, you’ll just draw more negative stuff to you.  

You’ll stub your toe as you get out of bed. You’ll realise you’ve run out of milk just as you’ve poured the hot water over the teabag. The kids will be even more EXCEPTIONALLY slow than normal getting ready (doesn’t seem possible right?!). You’ll lose your keys, you’ll get stuck in a traffic jam and yadda yadda bla bla crappy blah.

On the flipside of that, when you focus on the good stuff, that’s what you attract more of. If you start your day in a happy way you’ll discover the keys right where you left them, green traffic lights, parking spaces right outside the door, your favourite song on the get the idea.

So here’s what I want you to do, start every day with an ‘attitude of gratitude’. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and write down the following:

  1. Three things you’re grateful for right in that moment

  2. Three things you’re looking forward to that day

Now I know this might seem like a really difficult and pointless task for you (“I’m not grateful for anything” I hear you thinking “I’m broke and knackered and moody and living in a tiny house…” but this is the WHOLE POINT of the task. To change your thinking and get you into the habit of focusing on the things that you DO already have.

These don’t need to be life changing, earth shattering events. You could be grateful for the 10 minute lay in your kids let you have that morning. It might be that your husband brought you a cup of tea in bed. It could be the £5 you saved at the Supermarket yesterday with the vouchers you’d saved up….whatever it is, come up with SOMETHING. Even if you don’t feel overwhelmingly grateful for it right there and then and it’s just ‘kinda nice’ note it down anyway.  Get into the habit of focusing on, thinking about and being on the lookout for things in your life you’re grateful for. You’ll soon it find it easier and easier to come up with your three (and, hey, if you want to go past three then great!)

The second part of that is to note down the three things you’re looking forward to for that day and again these don’t need to be massive things.  It could be the 10 minutes peace you get that afternoon to sit down with a cup of tea before getting the kids from school. It could be the dinner you’re cooking that evening which is one of your favourite dishes. It could be watching the next episode of that new TV series you’ve been getting into, again just start to think about the day ahead.  This will stop you from feeling so stressed about all the things you feel you have to get done and instead keep your focus positive.

3. Your Cold Water Mood Boost!

So this one is going to seem a little bit weird….

But it’s super powerful and a fantastic way to get you into the best frame of mind to start the day!

Basically, it’s having a cold shower.

Yeah, I know, doesn’t seem much fun in that right?

But cold showers have been proven to up your happiness levels. They increase the blood flow in your body which causes the brain to send out those ‘happy chemicals’. This then gives you a bit of a mood boost.  Plus, they’re also great for your body as they help with weight loss (woohoo!) and reduces muscle inflammation.

If you can't quote cope with a full cold shower (I still can’t!), turn the water to cold at the end of your shower and stick your head under! Or even just a leg! Whatever you can manage for however long you can stand it. It will make you squeal and you’ll probably find yourself laughing at the craziness of it and all of this will help you to feel energised, refreshed and ready to face the day.

Just have a nice warm towel at the ready!
