Why do we attract what we focus on? What is the RAS? Law of Attraction

Hey! Welcome to the Blog! If you’ve been looking into the Law of Attraction then you may have heard that ‘what you focus on you attract’ but you may be wondering why?

I was when I first got started. I needed to know why I attract what I focus on and I needed more than just the ‘Trust the Universe’ stuff that a lot of Law of Attraction teachers out there were saying. (Trusting the Universe is part of the process by the way, but it’s such a small part and I’ll cover that in another Blog Post)

It wasn’t until I started studying how our brains work and how they play such a huge significant role in the the manifesting process to achieve our goals (or stop us from achieving them!) that I really got it.

Once I understood it, EVERYTHING changed. I could clearly see how I was attracting what I was focusing on - both in a positive and negative way - and how I could use this knowledge to achieve EVERY goal I set.

THE RETICULAR ACTIVATING SYSTEM (RAS)

Let me introduce you to your RAS. Located at the back of your brain (towards the nape of your neck). Its sole purpose is to filter the information we are fed every second of the day. We’re fed so much information from all our senses that we’d probably go insane if we didn’t have this filtering process. 

The way it knows what to filter, is by what you’re focusing on. What you’re thinking about, talking about, taking action on (or not taking action on), your beliefs and habits.

If you’re constantly thinking about something it must be important to you right? Therefore your RAS will be on the lookout for the things, people, events etc that are related to what you’re focusing on. To bring you more of it.

Why do we attract what we focus on with the Law of Attraction?

SO HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO THE LAW OF ATTRACTION?

So the Law of Attraction is about manifesting things into your reality right? Achieving your goals and creating your dream life.

Well when you put Law of Attraction techniques such as Affirmations, Visualisations, Journaling and Gratitude into action, you’re going to be focusing on those things. So your RAS is going to kick in to filter the information to bring your attention to the things that could help you create what it is you’re wanting to achieve.

So this is ultimately why with the Law of Attraction (and with everything, just we don’t always know it) what you focus on, you attract to you.

IS THIS ALWAYS GOOD?

No! Your RAS doesn’t distinguish between positive and negative, good and bad. It literally responds to what you tell it. Whatever you’re focusing on it will filter. 

So if you’re focusing on the bad stuff then I’m afraid you’ll be attracting more of it!

If you’re constantly talking about how broke you are, worrying about the bills on your doormat and feeling like crap every time you check your empty Bank Account, your RAS isn’t going to know you don't want MORE debt and bills, it’s just going to know this is what you’re ‘focusing on’ so will be on the lookout to bring you more of it.

Now you understand this, you can use this to achieve your goals, reduce your stress, feel happier, healthier, wealthier and more abundant in all areas.

Ensure you’re focusing on the things you actually want more often than not, as much as possible. And then watch it flow in!
